Competition Guideline

I. Equipment
- Surfing List (equipment needs based on conditions)

1. Board(s)
2. Swim fins
3. Surf shorts or
4. Wetsuits
5. Leashes for boards and fins
6. Watch
7. Wax
8. Sun Screen
- Beach List


1B. Cool, shaded area to relax.
2. Clothing based on conditions (warm or cold)
3. Sunglasses
4. Beach towel (big enough to change in)
5. Cooler
6. Foods: fruit, water, etc.

II. Need to know before you surf
- Commonly asked questions about competition rules
1. What are the Judges looking for?
2. What is the drop in rule?
3. How many waves are being scored?
4. How long are the heats?
- The Wave (study and learn the break)1. What type of break is it?
2. Where are the best waves coming in?
3. Time between sets?
4. How big are the waves and what are their ranges?
5. What are the tides doing?
6. Bottoms- shallow, deep, reef or sand?
7. Winds- now and later?
8. Fastest way in and out?
9. Rips / currents?

1B. Conform to the criteria.
2. Look for advantages in the surfing environment.
3. Concentrate on your surfing, not on your competitors.
4. Ride in front of the Judges.
5. Concentrate on wave selection (be in the right spot @ the right time).
6. Maximize your maneuver possibilities.
7. Surf radical, yet smooth.
8. Ride your waves as long as functional.
9. Only do maneuvers you are reasonably confident with.
10. Make a clean exit.
11. Be consistent.
12. Put combination to turns or arials together.

IV. After the heat (How did you do?)
1. What were the final results?
2. How could you have done better with...
A. Conforming to the criteria?
B. Knowing the break better?
C. Wave selection (catching the best waves)?
D. Quality of moves?
E. Quantity of moves?
F. Timing consistency?

Check the heat sheets for:
1B. All Judges have same number of waves on each sheet.
2. All the highest waves tabulated on every Judges sheet.
3. Addition correct on all sheets including master sheet.
4. Correct placing on the master sheet.
